Zero wins through the first month of the NFL season isn't where anyone wants to be.
But it is the reality the Carolina Panthers sit in after a 21-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. When looking at reality, 0-4 doesn't have a great ring to it.
Nonetheless, Panthers head coach, who has been the subject of scrutiny in recent days for his poor coaching performance, is begging Panthers fans to keep believing in him moving forward.
“We understand. We understand the discouragement,” he said of the disgruntled fans. “But the message is—keep the faith. We are turning over every stone, making every effort to get results now. We know that’s what the fans want. That’s what we want. That’s what Mr. Tepper wants. So, I believe there’s been encouraging things. I believe we are a young team that’s developing and growing. Even though we’re here to win now, we are growing and developing. And that doesn’t have to wait a year. We can grow in season.
“We have a new staff, a lot of turnover in the roster, so maybe more of an opportunity for us to meld and mesh together as the season goes on. So, lookin’ forward to that. We know it’s our responsibility to give the fans something to cheer about, so we look forward to doin’ that.”
The Panthers Week 4 loss came with a bevy of head-scratching decisions, that included Reich calling a play for someone who wasn't on the field.
In Monday's press conference, Reich also admitted that the clock management error at the end of the first half also fell on his shoulders.
“In hindsight, I should’ve called timeout. I should’ve called timeout,” he said. “That was my mistake. Fortunately, Eddy [Piñeiro] bailed me out and made the long field goal. Had I called timeout, we probably maybe been able to get a little bit closer on the field goal, give us a better chance. So, yeah, that was just my mistake. I should’ve called timeout.”
Week 4 wasn't the best of Reich. He knows it. Now that hope is that he can turn the ship around and find a way to win in Week 5.
