One team's misfortune can be another team's greatest ambition.
That is the position the Carolina Panthers are in after Adam Schefter reported the Tennessee Titans fired Mike Vrabel Tuesday.
"I spoke with Mike Vrabel and told him about my decision to make a change at head coach," Amy Adams Strunk the majority owner of the Titans said. "As I told Coach Vrabel, this decision was as difficult as any I've made as Controlling Owner. I appreciate Mike's contributions to the Tennessee Titans both on and off the field. Anyone who has ever met him knows how passionate and genuine he is, and he's been a strong supporter of the Nashville community. We wish Mike, Jen, and the Vrabel family nothing but the best in the future."
With the Panthers in the throws of a head coaching search, a top-tier head coach just landed on the market nearly free of charge.
If Carolina wants to be a serious organization, it at least has to reach out to Vrabel and see if he would interview for the head coaching job.
Yes, Carolina wants an offensive head coach. And yes, the franchise is hoping to marry Bryce Young's timeline and the next head coach hired, but this is a case where teams should abandon plan A and pursue the possibility of having one of the league's best coaches on the sideline.
During Vrabel's tenure in Tennessee, the Titans went 9-7 in his first two seasons and advanced to the AFC Championship Game during the 2019 season. A year later, the Titans finished 11-5 but lost in the first round of the playoffs.
His teams constantly punched above their weight when out-talented. He always had players prepared — exactly what the Panthers need after a 2-15 season.
But landing Vrabel won't be easy. He will have his pick of the litter when it comes to teams wanting him to coach for them. Still, if the Panthers are smart, David Tepper and his crew would at least try and land one of the best head coaches in the league.
Panthers go substance over style in latest head coach update
After news swirled and some precursor reports leaked, the Carolina Panthers released a list of head coach candidates.
