The Chicago Bears continue to bolster their defense with two more standouts in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Bears head coach Matt Eberflus continues to round out the back half of his defense by adding Oregon LB Noah Sewell along with Minnesota CB Terell Smith.
Here's a look at what each player will bring to Chicago's defense.
Round 5, Pick 148 overall: Noah Sewell, LB, Oregon
Sewell gives the Bears a versatile depth option at the linebacker position. He was a three-year starter for the Ducks and plays with a hard-nosed downhill style. Sewell is a running back’s worst nightmare with the ability to come up to the line of scrimmage and lay the lumber.
In three seasons at Oregon, Sewell registered 218 total tackles, 20.5 TFLs, 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and two interceptions. The Bears cash in with Sewell as the result of the Roquan Smith trade with the Baltimore Ravens. Sewell joins his brother Penei, who starts on the Detroit Lions offensive line.
Round 5, Pick 165 overall: Terell Smith, CB, Minnesota
The Bears stack young depth at the cornerback position by selecting Smith after adding Tyrique Stevenson in the second round on Friday night. Smith has great straight line speed to go along with tremendous ball skills.
Smith’s stock improved after strong showings at the Shrine Bowl and the NFL Scouting Combine. He ran a 4.41s 40-yard dash and at 6’0” 200lbs, he possesses the size necessary to hang with physical wide receivers at the next level.
Smith and Stevenson give the Bears two fantastic options in the cornerback room. If Smith doesn’t land a significant role in the defensive backfield early in the season, he figures to be a major factor on the special teams unit.
