The growth Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields demonstrated in his second season as the starter gives the franchise plenty of hope for the future. However, Fields’ name has been discussed in certain trade scenarios surrounding the 2023 NFL Draft, though most of which have been proven to be bogus.
One NFL analyst, who also happens to be a former quarterback, believes the trade discussion revolving around Fields is blasphemous. NBC Sports' Chris Simms took up for the Bears’ signal caller in a passionate rant with Pro Football Focus’ Mike Florio.
“Are you kidding me? Get the heck out of here,” Simms said on the trade speculation. ”We’re looking at one of the guys that might be one of the best running quarterbacks in the history of football. You don’t trade that away. He has special elite attributes that you can build something special off of.”
Simms isn’t wrong. In his first full season as the Bears’ starter, Field finished the season 63 yards shy of Lamar Jackson’s single-season rushing yards record by a quarterback (1,206) set in 2019.
He managed to flirt with history behind one of the NFL’s most porous offensive lines. Sure, he has plenty of room to grow as a passer, but who is to say Chicago can find a quarterback capable of matching his production as just a 23-year old?
Continuity is key in the NFL. Proceeding with Fields as the starter is something that general manager Ryan Poles is adamant about heading into the 2023 offseason. Bears fans should be excited about building around Fields, which will help him become a more well-rounded quarterback.
