The Cincinnati Bengals are now in danger of losing two offensive assistants this offseason.
On top of offensive coordinator Brian Callahan interviewing for several head coaching gigs, the New Orleans Saints are planning to interview quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher for their offensive coordinator job, per CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones.
Dan Pitcher coaching profile
Pitcher has been a staple with the Bengals' offensive coaching staff for the last eight years. He joined the club as a receivers coach in 2016, and was given the opportunity to become the assistant QB coach to Alex Van Pelt in 2018. The two worked together in their roles from 2018-19.
Van Pelt moved on to become the Cleveland Browns' OC in 2020, which led to Pitcher taking his old position in Cincinnati. Pitcher has been the Bengals' QB coach ever since, which is also the length of Joe Burrow's career thus far.
Following the 2022 season, Pitcher first received interest in becoming an offensive coordinator elsewhere. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers interviewed him for the job, and the Baltimore Ravens expressed interest as well.
The Bengals, wanting to keep Pitcher on staff, signed him to a contract extension that featured a raise in pay. It's heavily believed that both sides agreed Pitcher would become the team's next OC if Callahan were to move on.
Callahan is primed to do just that this month, having already interviewed with a few teams, but Pitcher may not wait around to see if it happens or not. The Saints held on to their former OC, Pete Carmichael, for 15 years before letting him go earlier this week.
Pitcher could very well become Carmichael's replacement, which would leave the Bengals without a succession plan for Callahan. The only way to keep him around is simply giving him the OC job now with Callahan still employed, and that's not a realistic option.
All of this could come down to timing, whether or not Callahan is offered a head coaching gig before or after Pitcher is offered an OC gig. The Bengals are powerless to stop either from happening.
