When Joe Burrow speaks, people tend to open their ears. The quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals has that affect on the football world.
In a recent appearance on Pardon My Take, Burrow talked about how the NFL needs to ensure two bye weeks if the schedule increases to 18 games, and that the second bye should be near the end of the regular season and act as an All-Star break like the NBA and NHL does it.
"Gotta have two bye weeks," Burrow said of an 18-game slate. "I think it'd be cool to do the normal bye week schedule that is now, like have it spread out, but then in Week 13, do the Pro Bowl break where you're doing the seven-on-seven, and all the skills challenges like the NBA does. Because I think that would get more ratings for the Pro Bowl, and then it would also give everybody that by week going into like the last six games."
It's a take that most of the internet wholeheartedly agrees with.
The two-bye week concession is something that will surely be requested by the NFLPA when the NFL proposes it in the near future. The bump up from 16 to 17 was only the stepping stone to the true long-term outcome. Figuring out a practical way to fit that second bye week in the schedule is the challenge.
But Burrow's idea might be the best way for the league to make it happen. Having the entire league off for a week and placing the Pro Bowl games in that slot is a way to get more eyes on the festivities, and everyone else around the league gets a needed break before the playoff push.
Everyone is crowning Burrow for his take, but it's not even the first time he put it out to the world.
Burrow told local media members all the way back in May about the midseason All-Star break idea should the league go forth with 18 games.
"Maybe you could do something like the first bye is kind of how we have it now and the second bye, everybody has it at once, and you make it like the Pro Bowl week or something like a like an All-Star break for the NBA," Burrow suggested. "People get paid a lot of money to have those discussions and make those decisions, but we'll see how it plays out."
Obviously more people listen to PMT than Burrow's press conferences, which is part of the reason why the topic is gaining more engagement now than it two months ago.
Burrow spoke on a lot more on the show, including how he enjoys being under the radar following an injury-filled season. It's all part of his newfound willingness to become more public as a superstar.
He certainly has the support from the public in this case.
