Cleveland Browns want to build off of what they accomplished last year which was getting back to the playoffs for the second time in four years. That is something that is unheard of in Cleveland and goes to show the different times the team is now in.
If the Browns want to get to the playoffs and do damage, they’re doing to have to be healthier in 2024. That starts with guys like Deshaun Watson and Nick Chubb being out there for the long haul.
Watson has played just 12 games through the last two seasons but the Browns are all in on his third year with the team being the one where things work out.
Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr projects that Watson will have his best season yet with the Browns by throwing for 32 touchdowns and adding another 10 on the ground. Cleveland would be thrilled with such a production level.
“Speaking of the Browns, this is the year we’ll get the on-field season we’ve expected from Deshaun Watson since his arrival in Cleveland. Despite the team bolstering its roster with two veteran quarterbacks who both have a heap of starting experience (Jameis Winston and Tyler Huntley) and jettisoning Joe Flacco to prevent fan sentiment from railroading Watson’s comeback, Watson will be able to piece himself together after offseason shoulder surgery and have the season that some who still root for the team have hoped for.” – Conor Orr, SI
It is the season the Browns badly need from Watson
Cleveland knew a hefty suspension was coming for Watson in his first season, so a wash was expected there in his first season. The Browns went 3-3 in his return during the 2022 season and he has a touchdown to interception ratio of 7-5 over those six games.
Last season, Watson showed slight improvement and had a 7-4 touchdown to interception ratio in what was five games and two drives against the Colts. Cleveland was 5-1 with Watson as the starter in 2023 and the only loss was to the Steelers in Week 2 in a game I don’t think they lose if Nick Chubb is not hurt.
This offseason, the Browns have continued to build around Watson to give him the best chance at success ending. They have brought in Jerry Jeudy, D’Onta Foreman, and Nyheim Hines to help out the personnel. The offense will now have input from offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, who has the ability to bring more stuff that Watson is comfortable with.
If Watson can bounce back and put up numbers like he had in 2020 when he was an MVP candidate, the Browns are going to be in good shape and will be able to play with anyone. Now, that is easier said than done.
ESPN’s suggestion for what Browns should do with former first-round pick is wrong on so many levels
The Browns can’t do this.
