The year is 2023 and the Cleveland Browns have a quarterback issue on their hands, who would have ever thought?

Deshaun Watson did not practice yet again on Wednesday and his status for Week 6 against the San Francisco 49ers is very cloudy. If he doesn’t go it won’t be rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson starting again like against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 4, it’ll be P.J. Walker from the practice squad.

“Just felt like it was the right decision for the team,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said on making the switch.

After just one start in the fourth game of his career, the Browns have benched Thompson-Robinson. That start against the Ravens didn’t go well, he threw three interceptions they were blown out.

It’s not all on DTR how that first start went, though, he revealed that he didn’t know he was starting until two and a half hours before the game. Watson said at his locker the Friday before the game he would be out there but he wasn’t. It is a disservice by the team to not have the rookie as ready as can be.

Thompson-Robinson said before Stefanski talked on Wednesday that he was not aware of any depth chart changes.

“I know as much as you guys do… We all try to work to be the starter every day, including Deshaun with his rehab and everything like that,” the rookie said.

To give a rookie one start, it goes bad, then he is benched isn’t ideal at all. It certainly can be a morale crusher for a young player, not to say that it is the case here

“Dorian is a young player. Very excited for his future. He’s a young player but a great teammate.”

The Browns traded Joshua Dobbs to the Arizona Cardinals for a fifth-round pick because DTR won the backup job. Now, the Browns have decided to rip it from him rather quickly.
