Cleveland Browns have had a top-level offensive line pretty much since Bill Callahan has been with the team coaching the group.
According to Pro Football Focus, the Browns have the fifth-best offensive line in the NFL. Through three games, the Browns are around where you’d expect them to be.
Jack Conklin went out at right tackle for the season in the very first game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Since then, rookie Dawand Jones has stepped in our right.
Jones has given up five pressure but no sacks or penalties accepted. The rookie has given the Browns everything they can ask for to this point.
Right guard Wyatt Teller certainly isn’t off to the best of starts with four pressures, one sack, and one penalty to his name. Teller has a couple of his famous bulldozing pancakes already. With Nick Chubb out for the season, his run blocking is even more important with a young back like Jerome Ford out there.
Center Ethan Pocic is the No. 6 center in football through three weeks, per PFF. I believe he’s played solid and if the Browns can get this level of play out of him they’ll take it. Pocic has five pressures, two penalties, and one sack allowed.
“The Browns' offensive line allowed a knockdown — sack or quarterback hit — on 9.8% of pass plays in Week 3, which was the highest rate for them in a game this season. Admittedly, they played against two stout defenses, but the Browns' offensive line ranks just 18th in the NFL in pass-blocking efficiency over the past two weeks.” – PFF
Cleveland needs more from Jedrick Wills Jr., who is the worst offensive lineman on the team through three weeks played. Wills is already responsive for 12 pressures allowed and two sacks. If Wills can step up, it would be big for the Browns.
One interesting aspect with the Browns is Deshaun Watson is a tough quarterback to block for, to be honest. The team has been open with adjusting to blocking for him, as he’s a guy who escapes and gets out of the pocket a bunch.
Right now, PFF has the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles as the top two units. If Cleveland can stay in the top five in terms of offensive lines in the NFL, the offense will have a chance to go far.
