In a shock to all, the Cleveland Browns have traded away backup QB Joshua Dobbs.
On the same day that Dobbs was named the backup, he was sent to the Arizona Cardinal along with a seventh-round pick for Arizona’s 2024 fifth-rounder.
Cleveland signed Dobbs this off-season to a one-year deal worth $2 million. The move signals that the Browns are comfortable where rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson is at and he will now be their backup.
Against the Washington Commanders in the second preseason game, Dobbs was 8-for-16 passing with an interception. It wasn’t the prettiest of performances against the Commanders’ backups. That was the only exhibition the veteran had played in.
This preseason, DTR has been the best rookie quarterback in the NFL. It is just a bit of an awkward move for them to trade Dobbs away on the same day he was named Deshaun Watson’s backup.
Arizona was very active today. They traded LB Isaiah Simmons to the New York Giants for a seventh-round pick. Later on, the Cardinals shipped OT Josh Jones and a seventh-round pick to the Houston Texans for a fifth-round pick.
Cleveland will now have the ability to keep an extra player on the roster that they wouldn’t have been able to do before by trading Dobbs. The Browns look primed to roll into the season with two quarterbacks on the roster.
Dobbs was never going to be cut with a $2 million cap hit, so Cleveland got rid of him the only way they could. It looks like it’s all worked out, even when it wasn’t expected.
Roster Bubble: 3 Browns players that need to have the game of their life against Chiefs
