Cleveland Browns have turned over the possibility of adding a familiar player at running back.
Free agent back Kareem Hunt is visiting the Browns on Tuesday and could be a player they sign following the season-ending injury that running back Nick Chubb suffered against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Hunt remains a free agent after being unsigned following a four-year stint with the Browns that ended after the 2022 season. The free-agent running back has had offers from the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts but is waiting on the right deal.
Last season with the Browns, Hunt’s yards per carry dropped to 3.8 from 4.9 the previous season. The yards per catch also dropped about two yards to 6.0. Familiarity with the system is likely an attractive reason to go after Hunt.
Hunt, a Willoughby, Ohio native, started his career with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017 when he also led the league in rushing with 1,327 yards on the ground. Hunt spent just two seasons with the Chiefs before they cut him following a video surfacing of him striking a female.
In terms of his best season with Cleveland, it was 2020 when he made five starts for the injured Chubb and played in all 16 games. That season, Hunt ran for 841 yards while adding another 304 as a pass catcher.
Chubb and Hunt were a pretty good combo over the last four years outside of last season when Hunt’s production fell off some. They’re also good friends and Chubb openly wanted to bring Hunt back following last season.
It will be interesting to see if the two sides can strike a one-year deal. Momentum says that it may just happen.
