The 2023 regular season gets one step closer to starting on Thursday when the Cleveland Browns take on the New York Jets in Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.
This obviously won't be a 60-minute showdown between Deshaun Watson and Aaron Rodgers, but it still gives the players at the bottom of the roster a chance to catch the attention of their respective coaching staffs
And, of course, it's organized football. The Hall of Fame ceremony is typically fun to watch, as well. This year's year's class includes names such as Ronde Barber, Don Coryell, Chuck Howley, Joe Klecko, Darrelle Revis, Ken Riley, Joe Thomas, Zach Thomas, and DeMarcus Ware.

What will Kellen Mond show in his debut?
Head coach Kevin Stefanski revealed that Kellen Mond and Dorian Thompson-Robinson will get a half each against the Jets. Interestingly enough, this will be Mond’s first time getting any kind of in-game action since being claimed last August off of waivers from the Minnesota Vikings. Mike Zimmer and the Vikings gave up on the former third-round pick quickly and he’s a long shot to make the Browns roster. This comes as a chance for him to show he should stick around on the practice squad.
Cleveland claimed the former Texas A&M Aggies’ standout for a reason. Even if it is in a dress rehearsal setting, Mond will need to take advantage of it.
3 Browns players to watch
- QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson: The preseason in 2023 is the only time you will see the Browns’ fifth-round selection for a while. DTR brings dual-threat ability that should fit nicely in an offense that has been built around Deshaun Watson. Thompson-Robinson will be Cleveland’s third quarterback all season likely, so the preseason will be nice to get him some reps.
- WR Jaelon Darden: Darden was an electric player at North Texas before being selected in the fourth-round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He provided them with return ability but was never able to carve out a role in the receiving game, so became expendable. After the Browns claimed him in December, he returned a couple of punts and that was it. With a full offseason with Cleveland and already having impressed some in training camp, Darden has a chance to make the roster. With the uncertainty around when Marquise Goodwin will be back, Cleveland could need another wideout to step up. That guy could be Darden who is battling with Jakeem Grant for the return job. Early on in camp, Darden has been one of Watson’s favorite connections. The 5-foot-8 Darden should play plenty Thursday.
- DT Maurice Hurst: When Hurst has been healthy in the NFL he has shown the ability to be a solid player in the middle. That’s the problem though, he hasn’t been healthy a ton. There are spots up for grabs when it comes to defensive tackle depth and Hurst has the chance to show he belongs prior to the season.
