The Cleveland Browns offensive line is not performing to its capabilities this season and has been a huge issue in the run game especially.
Out of those struggling left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. is the weak point of the offensive line. Wills is currently playing the worst ball of his career and is giving up pressure at an alarming rate.
Through four games and at the bye week, Wills is responsible for 36.7 percent of the pressures that the offensive line has given up. Those 18 pressures are equal to the amount that he gave up during his rookie season when he played in 15 games.
Wills has given up two sacks through four games and is on track to top last year’s career-high six sacks allowed. Unfortunately, the 2020 first-round draft pick has already given up 12 hurries, more than the nine he allowed his rookie season.
Wills came out of college protecting the blind side of Tua Tagovailoa at right tackle, since he’s a left-handed quarterback. Wills was thought to be a decently pro-ready tackle ready to step in and start. Over the course of his first three seasons, it is the inconsistent play that continues to haunt Wills.
Injuries have put Wills in bad positions in the past, he played with an ankle injury each of the last two seasons that was noticeable. You have to applaud him for fighting through but the drop-off in play was there.
The lack of effort and body language continues to be a very bad concern. Body language is something that is preached about at a young age, Wills is struggling with it following bad play.
Deshaun Watson creates some of his sacks but with Wills out left of him currently, it has to be hard trusting things.
Cleveland has already picked up Wills’ fifth-year option next season, so that money is guaranteed. The problem is that there are currently a ton of top-level tackles. Average tackles get paid in the NFL and that’s what Wills has been outside of a very bad start to this season.
Wills has to at least return to that level of play or it’s going to continue to be a real issue for the offense in 2023.
