No one has been a member of the Cleveland Browns as long as left guard Joel Bitonio on the current team. Bitonio is entering his tenth season with the franchise.
Unfortunately, that means Bitonio has been a part of some really bad teams during his rime in Cleveland. None of that really has to do with Bitonio, as he’s one of the best guards in the game.
What Bitonio said during his media availability on Thursday should get Browns’ fans optimistic for the season.
“I think so,” Bitonio said on if this is the best team on paper he’s been a part of. “I think if you look top to bottom…if you look at the bottom of the roster, those are tough spots. It's a little different than we've had in the past."
In the past, Browns fans often found themselves getting excited for trading camp players that were going to make the roster. The Browns kept two undrafted free agents on the active roster this year in safety Ronnie Hickman Jr. and Mohamoud Diabate — but it is a very different situation.
Players that had no business starting played many games for the Browns from the first snap just a few years ago. The rosters have gradually improved over the last few years but this is the first year you can truly say there is no glaring need for Cleveland.
With good roster construction comes expectations. Now in the fourth year for this general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski, it is time to win. Cleveland made the playoffs in 2020 but has missed them each of the last two seasons.
“We have urgency. I think the guys want to go out there and compete, get ready to go. I think we're excited to get out there as a team, start the year off,” said Bitonio.
