The transfer portal has drastically altered the college football landscape over the last couple of years. Obviously it serves similarly to free agency on the NFL level, allowing for programs to improve and flip their roster quickly. That’s the function most think about.
From the player’s perspective, it also makes for a second chance of sorts. Players have the chance to find a new destination, a new home, and get a fresh start. That could be a viable options for several talented quarterbacks after this season, some my choice, and others because the writing might be on the wall.
Garrett Nussmeier (LSU)
It has been a roller coaster first season as the starter for Nussmeier, who some were hyping up to be one of the top signal callers in the 2025 NFL Draft class. That hype has faded big time, having now thrown five interceptions over the last two games. While Nussmeier has some talent, and eligibility remaining, five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood is on his way this offseason. There are some that believe that Underwood will be the answer immediately, and it’s possible that the program could move on from Nussmeier if he does sign with LSU next month.
Carson Beck (Georgia)
Heading into the 2024 season, a lot of NFL Draft pundits and analysts had Beck pegged as the top signal caller in this year's class. He was coming off of a strong 2023 season and was looking to build on it. Unfortunately, Beck has been terrible this season, having already thrown 12 interceptions. That number is twice as much as Beck had all last season. While Beck is in his fifth season, he does have one year of eligibility remaining after having the free year in 2020, and redshirting in 2021. A change of scenery might be best for both sides.

Scouting report for Clemson defensive tackle DeMonte Capehart
Conner Weigman (Texas A&M)
The Aggies are in a really strange quarterback situation. Weigman had a lot of hype coming into the season, but was very disappointing. Now Marcel Reed is taking the majority of the snaps, who brings more of a dual threat profile to the table. The writing feels like it’s written on the wall for Weigman, and it feels highly likely that a move happens this offseason. It’s highly likely that there will be a robust market for the talented pocket passer.
Ashton Daniels (Stanford)
After some solid moments in 2023, it has been a season to forget for Daniels. In eight games played this fall, he has thrown for just 1,011 yards, six touchdowns, and eight interceptions. The Cardinal have a true freshman quarterback Elijah Brown who was a nice recruit, and has a ton of promise. Resetting and letting Brown be the guy in 2025 feels wise. This team needs to start showcasing some of their increased recruiting efforts under head coach Troy Taylor.
Blake Shapen (Mississippi State)
Shapen was actually having a really nice season working with head coach Jeff Lebby before getting injured. In four games, he had thrown for 974 yards and eight touchdowns, while completing over 68 percent of his passes and throwing just one interception. Since the former Baylor signal caller only played in four games, he was able to preserve a redshirt. In his absence, true freshman quarterback Michael Van Buren has shown a lot of promise. So much so that it wouldn’t be surprising if this Mississippi State team rolled with him heading into the future.
