We haven’t seen something quite like Colorado athlete Travis Hunter. There have been players who have played both sides of the football in spurts, but to the level that NFL evaluators are split at which side of the football is best for him is extremely rare. Hunter comes in at the No. 3 player on the most terrifying players heading back to college football in 2024. The word unicorn is thrown out a little too often in this space, but Hunter is legitimately a rare two-way player.

It wasn’t long ago that Hunter shocked college football by signing with Jackson State. As a five-star recruit coming out of Collins Hill High School in Georgia, Hunter spurned a lot of top programs to play for Deion Sanders. He then followed Coach Sanders when he took the Colorado head coaching job prior to the 2023 season.

Despite some inconsistencies from a team perspective, Hunter was most spectacular in his first season on the FBS level as a sophomore. On offense, he exploded for 57 receptions for 721 yards, and five touchdowns in just nine games.

Also a weapon from his cornerback position, Hunter would record 30 total tackles, two tackles for loss, three interceptions, and eight more pass breakups. That performance has created an interesting debate about what is best for Hunter’s future. On the next level, playing 90 plus snaps a game and both sides isn’t realistic.

There is a decision that ultimately has to be made. For now, Hunter is one of the unique athletes we have seen in college football in some time now. Every Saturday, you can bet that every opponent will be circling No. 12 on their game plan to avoid. Whether the Buffaloes do take a step next season will be determined by just how good Hunter is in 2024. He’s that dynamic.
