In the wonderful world of social media, postgame interviews have taken on a new life of itself in today's college football landscape. We saw our latest viral moment following Syracuse’s 37-31 loss to Boston College over the weekend. As you can expect, that close of a defeat can have a negative effect on the losing team.
Syracuse head coach Fran Brown met with the media, and spoke about the impact that loss has on him. He had an interesting, and slightly disturbing response to his own reaction to losses.
“Honestly I have a ritual. When we lose, I don’t even get a shower until early this morning. I'm just mad. I just brush my teeth. I don’t deserve soap… I’m just focused on trying to get back, and make sure that the players mentally know that I let them down.
I just wake up all night, especially when you lose. I can’t sleep in the bed when we lose because I didn’t shower that day. I just brush my teeth because I have to so you all can’t say that my breath stinks. You have to earn the right to do certain things. Winners get washed. Losers, I kinda just have to wait a little bit.”
On the one side, you love to hear the demeanor that Coach Brown brings. The accountability he has with his losses is exactly how it should be. He is the lead man in charge, and he obviously takes it seriously.
We have heard the cliche before that some people “hate losing a lot more than they like winning”, and clearly Coach Brown qualifies as one of those people. Syracuse football has been down for several years, and that type of perspective is probably just what that program needs. Losing should never just be brushed off.
Of course, however, there are going to be some jokes about it. It’s a half joking remark but I’m not sure that a quick shower is going to erase the sting of losing a football game, but to each his own. Soap should be appreciated but it isn’t exactly a bar of gold. In fact, washing off the stink of a disappointing loss might be healthier ritual.
