The Alabama Crimson Tide is preparing to win another SEC Championship in Atlanta this weekend against the Georgia Bulldogs, but there’s still work to be done off the field as well.

As we all know, the college football calendar never makes sense with head coaches being hired, the transfer portal heating up, and early signing day happening this week for recruits.

Alabama holds the sixth-best recruiting class for 2026, according to On3 and Rivals, and it almost took a big hit last night after a scare from one top recruit.

Four-star CB Zyan Gibson decommits and recommits in under an hour

Zyan Gibson is the 65th overall recruit in the 2026 class and the ninth-ranked CB according to Rivals. He’s a critical part of Alabama’s recruiting class coming in and was also Kalen DeBoer’s first commitment from the 2026 class. That’s why people were shocked to see the news that Gibson was decommitting from Alabama, with early signing day just days away.

Rivals/ON3 National Recruiting Reporter Hayes Fawcett shared a graphic on the decommitment news, which has since been deleted at the request of Gibson, and it took people by surprise. Alabama fans can breathe a sigh of relief, though, as Gibson clarified after the news that he was, in fact, still locked in with the Crimson Tide.

Zyan Gibson stays with Alabama and plans to sign this week

After a roller coaster of emotions for fans, Gibson took to social media to clarify that the report was due to miscommunication, and he’s still with Alabama and plans to put ink to paper this week to prove it.

The early signing day period is from December 3rd to the 5th, and Gibson says he plans on signing with Alabama on Wednesday. The Gadsden, Alabama native is one of ten four-star recruits for the Crimson Tide, and the fourth overall player in the state. DeBoer continues to recruit in-state at a high level, which people had serious doubts about. Alabama will continue to focus on winning on the field this season, while it wins off the field as well with its recruiting class locked in.

Alabama has lost some key assistant coaches and recruiters this week, including WR coach JaMarcus Shephard, who was hired to be the next head coach at Oregon State, so keeping the 2026 recruiting class around is a top priority. So far, the coaching staff has done a great job doing so, and winning the SEC Championship this weekend can be another trophy to show off to recruits when they visit.
