Alabama coach takes an inadvertent shot at Hugh Freeze with telling comments about Auburn’s offense following his firing
Kalen DeBoer knew exactly what he was doing when discussing the changes in Auburn.
A lot of people may not know it, because he speaks only once a week, but Alabama Crimson Tide DC Kane Wommack is one of the most intense guys in the program. You can see his passion for the sport in how he coaches and even how he speaks. It’s part of the reason his name is being floated around in some high-profile SEC jobs.
Wommack has a take-no-prisoners mentality about him, and while he didn’t go as far as to call Hugh Freeze out by name when discussing the difference in Auburn’s offense before and after his firing, he didn’t have to.
Kane Wommack sees a new look Auburn Tigers following Hugh Freeze’s firing
“Just really happy for [interim Auburn OC] Derrick [Nix]. He’s doing a great job,” Wommack said via the Alabama Crimson Tide’s YouTube channel on Monday. “I mean, you can tell a noticeable difference. And some of the things they’re doing, from an execution standpoint, they’re playing within the framework of what their players can do. They’re getting the ball to their playmakers and creating some explosive plays both in the run and pass game. So it will be a great challenge for us as always, but certainly we are very much looking forward to the game.”
That difference that Wommack is talking about? Well, in the two games since Freeze was dismissed, Auburn has scored 100 points. Now, 62 of those came alongside a quarterback change against the Mercer Bears, but Auburn also scraped and clawed to a close loss against Vanderbilt, while putting up 38 points — more than double what it was averaging when Freeze was calling plays.
It’s the classic case of what’s understood doesn’t need to be explained. Wommack didn’t have to put a name on it to make it crystal clear that Auburn, but especially the offense, is looking much better following its coaching change, and Kalen DeBoer tends to agree.
“Obviously, they seem to be playing free and putting up a lot of points in the last two weeks,” DeBoer added.
We’ll see if Alabama can slow down the new-look Tigers on Saturday.
