Earlier this month David Sanders (of Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC), the top offensive tackle in the 2025 recruiting class, announced that his recruitment was down to six college football programs:
- Alabama
- Clemson
- Georgia
- Ohio State
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
However, this past weekend Sanders took a visit to Alabama, where On3 Sports sources said, "[Alabama] made up a lot of ground," in the recruiting battle.
Sanders has been considered a top five player in the nation for nearly two years now and thus has become the target of nearly 50 college football teams. Alabama had him on campus for a camp visit in 2022, but it had been quite some time since Sanders had been to Tuscaloosa for any kind of intentional visit capacity.
Sanders announced that he'll actually be returning to Alabama again this summer, making it two visits within three months with the Crimson Tide. However, Alabama isn't alone. Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio State, Clemson, and South Carolina will all be hosting Sanders on campus from mid-April to late June as well. It seems this race will be a tight one.
Last summer and into late fall it seemed that Sanders was leaning towards either Florida State or Tennessee after he visited both schools twice in a span of a few months. But now this spring he's already visited Clemson three times in various capacities and has long-standing relationships with the coaches there. With Florida State now officially out of his top six, the most recent steam would suggest Tennessee and Clemson are atop the heap for his services, but Alabama may have just closed the gap.
This will be a critical battle to win for new head coach Kalen DeBoer. If he can prove his hand at winning top ten recruits like Sanders the worry surrounding the Nick Saban succession may subside. But! If Tennessee surges back with their high flying offense to steal Sanders, or Clemson's old school style wins the day, the future of Alabama's dynasty may be in real jeopardy.
