Alabama’s latest injury report creates some concern following a physical loss to Florida State
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer provided an updated injury report on Monday, and it was fairly extensive.
The Alabama Crimson Tide is attempting to move past a rough season opener against Florida State. On Monday, head coach Kalen DeBoer, defensive coordinator Kane Wommack and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb all spoke to the media. One of the first things DeBoer did was provide an updated injury report, which included six players (four on offense, two on defense).
Here’s everything he said about each of them, plus more context from us.
LB Jah-Marien Latham
“Jah-Marien Latham had a lower-body injury. We’ll see how he progresses. He’ll be day-to-day throughout this week.”
The skinny: Latham was forced to leave Saturday’s game against Florida State with a lower-body injury. He was unable to walk off under his own power, so this update is encouraging news. Latham played 20 snaps while also getting the start. There were times when he was on the field alongside another Wolf (Qua Russaw) and a Bandit (LT Overton) with Alabama giving a lot of different looks upfront.
WR Isaiah Horton
“Isaiah Horton, really proud of the way he fought through a lower-body injury that he had, but just kept fighting through Saturday. Was certainly limited, still feeling that a little bit, but he just continued to compete. He’s someone that it doesn’t surprise me that’s what we saw. We expect him to be full-go by the end of the week. We’ll build up as he can tolerate here early on.”
The skinny: Horton wasn’t 100% going into Saturday’s matchup, but he played through an ailment en route to 23 snaps and a start at X-receiver. While he started, it was clear that he was limited, and actually finished with the fourth-most snaps amongst the receivers. Germie Bernard led the team with 69 while Ryan Williams (61) and Rico Scott (47) both finished ahead of him too. Horton only got one target, which went for a six-yard gain.
WR Ryan Williams
“Ryan will go through the concussion protocol throughout the week. He’ll have a day-to-day situation.”
The skinny: Williams played for most of the game (61 of a possible 75 offensive snaps), but it looked like he wasn’t 100% even prior to the late-game concussion. Nothing has been confirmed on that, but the sophomore finished with the second-most targets (11) behind Bernard, who had 14. Unfortunately, Williams only brought in five of those for 30 yards, good for a six-yard average. He also had three drops. Hopefully, he’s able to get back onto the field sooner rather than later and recapture his 2024 form.
OL Jaeden Roberts
“He’s been out there on the practice field for some time now, but just for everyone to feel good and taking full-go reps. He traveled. He could have gone in the game if we needed to, but didn’t have him play out there.”
The skinny: Roberts had missed some time in fall camp trying to work his way back from a concussion, but was fully cleared on Friday prior to the season opener against Florida State. Granted, DeBoer did mention that he had already been participating some in practice. Despite being made available for Saturday, the fifth-year senior didn’t see any snaps against the Seminoles. This weekend’s game against Louisiana-Monroe could present some opportunities though. Roberts is a multi-year starter at right guard.
DL Tim Keenan III
“Tim Keenan will be week-to-week just kind of moving forward, but he’ll still be out this week.”
The skinny: So Keenan will for sure be out this weekend against Louisiana-Monroe, but we don’t know what will happen from there. Alabama missed his leadership against Florida State. Not only is the multi-year starter a team captain, but the drop off in experience behind him is pretty drastic with Jeremiah Beaman being a redshirt freshman and London Simmons being a true freshman who didn’t enroll until the summer. Hopefully, Keenan is closer to returning by the Wisconsin game, but it sounds like Georgia is a more likely scenario following the bye week.
RB Jam Miller
“Jam Miller is still week-to-week, coming along real nicely with his progression. So optimistic there, here in the short future.”
The skinny: Alabama missed Miller more than we were expecting in the season opener. He’s an explosive home run-hitter who brings trusted three-down potential, both in pass protection and as a receiver out of the backfield. He’s not expected to return against the Warhawks, but Wisconsin might be a possibility. There original timetable, or at least according to some reports, was Georgia after the bye week. Miller will provide a needed boost to Alabama’s running back room with his eventual return. Until then, the Crimson Tide will continue to rely on players such as Richard Young, Daniel Hill and Kevin Riley.
