Alabama Roster Rankings: Big year from OT Wilkin Formby will be critical to Tide's offensive and overall team success
Offensive tackle Wilkin Formby is going to be a critical piece to Alabama’s success, both offensively and overall, this upcoming season.
Alabama starts fall camp on Wednesday, and the focus has already shifted towards the season opener against Florida State on Aug. 30. So, we continue on with our summer roster rankings where we take a look at almost every player individually.
The only ones who won't be included in the rankings are those three summer enrollees (Chuck McDonald, Kaleb Edwards and London Simmons) and freshman punter Alex Asparuhov, who was out the entire spring due to injury. That brings the total number to 78 players while the first rankings included just 59 players (freshmen and JUCO weren't included).
Previous roster rankings: Nos. 74-78, Nos. 70-73, Nos. 66-69; Nos. 62-65; Nos. 58-61; Nos. 54-57; Nos. 50-53; Nos. 46-49; Nos. 42-45; Nos. 38-41; Nos. 34-37; Nos. 30-33; Nos. 26-29; Nos. 22-25
No. 21 – DB DaShawn Jones
Previous rank: No. 16 (-5)
Jones was a nice late pickup in the post-spring transfer portal window last year. After playing 875 snaps and getting 11 starts for Wake Forest from 2022-23, the former Demon Deacon came in and provided depth and versatility for the Crimson Tide in his first season in Tuscaloosa.
The now 6-foot, 190-pound defensive back started off as the fourth perimeter corner behind Domani Jackson, Zabien Brown and Jaylen Mbakwe. But around the midway point of the season, he started to take over as the No. 3 in front of Mbakwe before sliding inside against LSU and permanently becoming Devonta Smith's backup at the Husky position.
Typically, the Husky is a little bigger than Jones, but he makes up for leaner stature with impressive physicality. His ability to be effective against the run, on top of his history as a perimeter corner, make him an intriguing and complete inside option who should at least be serviceable to good. His starting job is likely the most vulnerable of the secondary starters, but he's better than some give him credit for.
Projected role in 2025: Starting HUSKY/depth perimeter CB
No. 20 – LB Nikhai Hill-Green
Previous rank: No. 18 (-2)
Hill-Green was Alabama's highest-rated signing out of the transfer portal this offseason. Rivals/On3 had the journeyman defender ranked as the No. 78 overall player and the No. 3 off-ball linebacker after he finished with 82 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, four pass breakups and two QB hurries for Colorado in 2024.
Before transferring to Colorado, he spent his first two seasons at Michigan and then a year at Charlotte where he started and totaled 73 tackles, nine tackles for loss and two more sacks. At 6-2, 235, he's more of an old school thumper with good, not great range in coverage. I wouldn't say he's a liability when dropping, but his strength is run fits and working downhill.
Alabama is returning both Deontae Lawson and Justin Jefferson, but Lawson is coming off a rough season-ending injury. Plus, we saw this coaching staff effectively deploy three starting-caliber linebackers last year with Lawson, Jefferson and Jihaad Campbell. Only two will be on the field at the same time though with none of this new trio having Campbell's edge versatility.
Projected role in 2025: Starting/rotational LB
No. 19 – OT Wilkin Formby
Previous rank: No. 21 (+2)
Formby is one of Alabama's most critical pieces in 2025. We know at least three of the Crimson Tide's top five offensive linemen will be effective with returning starters Kadyn Proctor (left tackle), Parker Brailsford (center) and Jaeden Roberts (right guard). That leaves right tackle and left guard.
There's still an ongoing position battle for left guard between Kam Dewberry and Geno VanDeMark, but Formby has all but secured the right tackle job (assuming health). That could leave some fans nervous after his rough performance against USF last season where he allowed five pressures, a sack and had four holding penalties.
People need to understand that while he got benched after that game, he improved quite a bit throughout last season. He played some the following week against Wisconsin, but then we didn't see him for the next three games. Then in a tough road environment against Tennessee, he began to get his feet wet again (eight snaps) before playing 18 and 17 against Missouri and LSU.
Over the last three contests against Mercer, Auburn and Michigan, Formby basically platooned with Elijah Pritchett, playing 45, 37 and 44 snaps, respectively. And while he did continue to give up the occasional pressure, he didn't allow any sacks or QB hits. Plus, he didn't commit anymore penalties after the USF game. So four penalties in 71 snaps against the Bulls, and then not another penalty over his last 186 snaps. That's trending in the right direction.
Yes, you should expect some continued growing pains. I don't think Formby is a completed product yet, but he'll be a pleasant surprise this season and should give Alabama one of the better bookend duos in college football.
Projected role in 2025: Starting RT
No. 18 – LB Justin Jefferson
Previous rank: No. 19 (+1)
So it took him a little while, but Jefferson finally started to become the player I had hoped he'd be when he signed with Alabama as a JUCO guy before the 2023 season. The guy is a heat-seeking missile when working downhill against the run, and he's a plus athlete in coverage. Yes, his size has somewhat hindered him at times, but overall, he's a strong, reliable option on the second level.
I can see Lawson platooning with either Jefferson or Hill-Green early, but if Lawson recaptures previous form, I could see Hill-Green becoming Alabama's early-down option playing next to him with Jefferson being a sub-package rotational piece in obvious passing situations.
I don't know exactly how it's going to look at this position in 2025. There are too many unknowns (what does Lawson's recovery look like, how's Hill-Green transitioning to Kane Wommack defense and the SEC, etc.). I'm confident that Alabama's going to field two suitable linebackers though.
Projected role in 2025: Starting/rotational LB
