Alabama Football looks like it has the running backs to dominate college football after a special A-Day spring game performance on Saturday. The Crimson Tide always have special running backs, but new head coach Kalen DeBoer looked more than confident in his running game today, continually feeding them, finding consistent success with a talented trio of young stars-in-the-making.
Jam Miller, Justice Haynes, and Richard Young completely took over the A-Day game in the first half, looking like the best Alabama running back trio since Josh Jacobs, Najee Harris, and Damien Harris. All four scores by the Crimson Tide offense today came from those three players, and it started with an early physical run by Justice Haynes.
Then almost immediately thereafter, Richard Young paired a couple of punishing runs together. And while Young is largely expected to be the third running back in the pecking order, he was running hard all day. Young, a former five star recruit, would not go down on first contact, stacking angry runs back to back to back on his way to the second touchdown of the day for the Alabama offense.
From that point on in the A-Day game it was the Jam Miller show. He walked in an easy score for the third touchdown of the day. Then he followed that up by making the play of the day, side-stepping a defender to break free for a big a 50-yard run.
Miller then immediately followed up his long run by punching it on off left tackle for his second touchdown of the day. Miller also put together a few solid reps of pass protection, proving he's a do-it-all, every down playmaker at running back. Justice Haynes impressed with a solid blitz pick up and 10-yard reception later in the game too, but Miller was the most impressive of the Alabama running back trio for much of the day.
All in all, the running back trio of Miller, Haynes, and Young accounted for all four scores and nearly all of the yardage production for Alabama in the A-Day game. Germie Bernard did connect with Jalen Milroe for one long play. Kobe Prentice hauled in a nice deep crosser from Ty Simpson. But overall it's clear, the strength of the Crimson Tide is the run game right now.
If Miller, Haynes, and Young continue improving upon their already special skills, Alabama may have a running back trio that's ready to dominate college football by this fall.
