Alabama HC Kalen DeBoer sends a clear message to Ty Simpson regarding a disturbing trend in his quarterback play
Ty Simpson will have to cleanup a continuing issue going forward.
The Alabama Crimson Tide still has everything to play for following a disappointing homecoming loss to the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday. The problem coming out of the game is that if you didn’t already know that Alabama’s offense was one-dimensional, you do now.
Another game under 100 yards on the ground forced Ty Simpson into far too much hero ball. A game that saw him miss passes that looked like layups for him all season, it wasn’t just the scattershot accuracy that cost Simpson.
It was the turnovers. Turnovers that Kalen DeBoer knows can’t happen, especially when accounting for the state of his rushing offense.

“I mean, with the pressure that they brought…He’s gotta get rid of it and be okay with throwing it away,” said DeBoer of Simpson after the game via Alabama’s YouTube channel. “You can only hold on so long, you’re going to get overwhelmed and outnumbered, and so you just got to understand the situation. I know it’s third down and he wants to stay on the field, but you just got to understand, you know, your defense playing pretty good, too. And you just got to live with punting once in a while.”
It’s hard to argue that Simpson is blameless. That strip-sack fumble was not only the fifth of the season for Simpson, but it was also his fifth consecutive game in which he lost the football. That is a trend that, along with the run game woes, finally caught up to Alabama.
But when you have no run game to rely on, you start pressing at QB. That led some in DeBoer’s presser to ask if there is too much on Simpson’s shoulders.
“No, I think we had enough quick game,” said DeBoer when asked if Simpson had too much pressure on him. “I think we had enough quick throws out there, you know, we were pretty efficient doing it, you know. And guys were making plays, and I thought he managed it well.”
The bottom line is, the margin for error within Alabama’s offense is razor-thin. When facing good defenses, unless it suddenly figures out the rushing attack, it will have to be perfect in the turnover margin.
And that starts with Simpson. His Heisman Trophy candidacy may have gone out the window on Saturday night, but he couldn’t care less. If this is the lesson he and his teammates need to win a national championship, they will gladly take it.
