Ty Simpson’s recent struggles were worth talking about for Kalen DeBoer.

The Alabama Crimson Tide bounced back at home with a statement win on the ground against Eastern Illinois, 56-0.

Even in a blowout game, there are still many takeaways, both good and bad, to take away from the team. The field goal struggles continued, which Kalen DeBoer addressed after the game, and for some reason, wide receiver Ryan Williams still can’t bring in routine catches.

Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb made a point to run the ball at will and establish the rushing attack after taking recent criticism, but we saw some struggles from Ty Simpson and the passing game. DeBoer also addressed that after the game, and feels the same way Alabama fans should about Simpson.

Kalen DeBoer isn’t worried about Ty Simpson’s play

People are going to look at the box score and see two interceptions and no touchdowns for Simpson and freak out, but that shouldn’t be the case. DeBoer actually respected Simpson for throwing the Hail Mary like he did, and knew his opportunities would be limited.

“Well, yeah, I mean, the last one, he has to throw in the end zone at the end of the half,” DeBoer said. “In fact, I told him, I’m glad you threw in the end zone, because that means the stats don’t matter, right? Because that’d be one where a lot of quarterbacks would have just checked it down and, you know, you’re, you’re up 28 to nothing. I think it was at the time, and they don’t want that. I appreciate that about Ty, you know, that’s gonna do no good.”

“Your goal is to try to score. And so, you know, he had a good week of practice and probably forced the one in there out to see the film a little bit, check that play. But, you know, probably forced that one in there. And I think sometimes that happens in these games, you try to force the ball down the field. You know, he didn’t get as many opportunities. Probably knew it was going to be a shortened game, but you’ve got to be disciplined. And you know, I really feel like he’ll do that move forward, just like he has all season.”

Is Ty Simpson in a slump with recent turnovers?

After throwing only one interception over the first nine games of the season, Simpson has thrown three in the last two games, including two against Eastern Illinois. As expected, people are freaking out and hitting the panic button with the recent turnovers.

Sure, the stats were ugly, but as DeBoer said, the one throw was a forced play with Simpson’s limited opportunities with the run game as the main focus, and the other was a Hail Mary. Simpson also didn’t have wide receiver Germie Bernard and top tight end Josh Cuevas to throw to. People are going to overreact to this game, but Simpson still had 326 passing yards on a tough Oklahoma defense last week. Simpson will be just fine, and he has a big opportunity next week.

The Iron Bowl is a great opportunity for Alabama to make one last statement on its resume, while Simpson bounces back like DeBoer expects him to. The run game finally found its rhythm this week, so hopefully the two can merge like we’ve been seeing and turn into a well-balanced offense.
