Alabama finally received relieving news to provide clarity to a major distraction ahead of Iron Bowl game
Alabama’s defense will have its coach during the most important time of the year.
The Alabama Crimson Tide is heading into the Iron Bowl game against Auburn with its entire season on the line and no room for error.
They go into the final game of the regular season as the No. 10 team in the country after the College Football Playoff selection committee released its latest rankings, and Alabama controls its own destiny. Playing at Jordan-Hare Stadium is daunting enough, and the last thing it needs is more distractions with recent rumors of coaches leaving for other head coaching positions.
Luckily for the defense, one rumor can be put to rest: Kane Wommack won’t be taking the position he was listed as a finalist for.
Kane Wommack is not headed to Arkansas as the next head coach
The downside to being a consistent top team in the country year after year is that you have to deal with other football programs wanting your assistant coaches. Wommack has put together an impressive season for the defense, which started rough but found its groove, leading to him being considered for head coaching positions.
ESPN’s Senior CFB reporter, Pete Thamel, listed Wommack as a finalist for the head coaching position at Arkansas, but reports are now saying that USF head coach Alex Golesh will take the job.
Wommack was one of four finalists named, along with Golesh, and it’s a major win for Alabama to have Wommack still around. Teams are starting to announce the hiring of new head coaches, even though their current teams aren’t done with the season, and Alabama could’ve been in that boat. Arkansas would’ve likely announced the decision before Alabama played in the Iron Bowl, or before the SEC Championship and playoffs if Alabama makes it.
It would’ve been a huge distraction, and the last thing the defense needs after their impressive performances over the last few months. They’ve avoided losing Wommack, but they might not be out of the clear yet.
Will Kane Wommack leave for anywhere else?
Just because Arkansas is taking another candidate, that doesn’t mean another school won’t be interested in Wommack. He was a head coach at South Alabama and has that experience, along with showing that he can be a top coach in a brutal SEC schedule. He isn’t directly linked to any other openings right now, but more positions will open up over the next few weeks, and many more dominoes will fall to shake up the college football landscape.
The good news, however, is that Kalen DeBoer and Alabama’s defense will have its coach during the most important time of the season, barring any shocking announcements. They need to take advantage by getting a dominant win against Auburn to improve their resume even more and go to the SEC Championship.
