Alabama QB Ty Simpson leaves no doubt how he feels about the Tennessee Vols’ defense ahead of The Third Saturday in October
The Alabama Crimson Tide are set to host the Tennessee Vols this weekend in Tuscaloosa. The Vols won last year’s meeting.
Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson isn’t giving the Tennessee Vols any bulletin board material this week (his teammate, wide receiver Germie Bernard, already took care of that).
On Tuesday, a reporter ask Simpson what makes Tennessee’s defense “vulnerable”.
Simpson didn’t take the bait.
“I honestly don’t think they’re vulnerable at all, to be honest with you,” said Simpson. “They do a lot. They’re good up front. They’ll play man. They’re physical when they move around. They’re fast. I mean, it’s just like an SEC defense. They’re going to cause chaos. They’re going to blitz.
“So we got to be on our P’s and Q’s and we got to be disciplined with everything. Because they’re going to bring everything they got at us. We just got to make sure that we make plays. Because their offense is going to make plays with how tempo they are. We just need to understand that we need to do our job. That’s a good defense. I’m pretty sure they’re number one in sacks, number one in turnovers and touchdowns. So we got to protect the ball. But I don’t think they’re vulnerable at all, to be honest with you. I think they’re one of the top defenses in the country.”
Tennessee’s defense has been a little odd so far this season
Tennessee’s defense has certainly given up some yards this season. The Vols are No. 123 in the nation in passing yards allowed. The Vols are also giving up 29.3 points per game (No. 106 in the nation).
On the other hand, Simpson is right that Tennessee has the most sacks among Power-4 programs. The Vols have also made numerous big plays on defense — Tennessee has four defensive touchdowns, four interceptions, and seven fumble recoveries to go with their 26 sacks and 50 tackles for loss.
Alabama, by comparison, has 29 tackles for loss, nine sacks, six interceptions, five fumble recoveries, and zero defensive touchdowns.
Tennessee will give up some yards, but the Vols tend to find a way to get the ball back, too.

‘I don’t want to say it’s personal’ – Alabama QB Ty Simpson has a history with Tennessee, and he’s ready to face the Vols
Alabama Crimson Tide QB Ty Simpson was recruited heavily by the Tennessee Vols. Josh Heupel, however, had just been hired to replace Jeremy Pruitt, and Simpson couldn’t pull the trigger on committing to Tennessee.
