Alabama’s latest transfer portal departure features the loss of a starter that few saw coming for the Crimson Tide
Alabama just lost its second 2025 starter to the portal, and this one could hurt a lot more.
It has been a busy few days for the Alabama Crimson Tide, as the mass exodus of players into the transfer portal has worsened the depth of the Tide. However, until last night, no 2025 starters had entered the portal until the departure of WR and starting returner Cole Adams.
Armed with plenty of ammo at the WR position and with more potentially to come, the loss of a starting kick and or punt returner pales in comparison to the loss of a starting offensive lineman, which happened to Alabama on Sunday afternoon.
Alabama RT Wilkin Formby enters transfer portal
“Alabama starting RT Wilkin Formby is entering the NCAA transfer portal. He started 14 games this year for the Tide this year and started two games at right tackle in 2024. He brings 1,070 snaps over 27 games,” wrote ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel on Instagram on Sunday. “He’s 6-foot-7, 324 pounds and came to Alabama ranked No. 110 overall in ESPN’s recruiting rankings. He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining.”
Formby was as solid as they come as a pass-protecting right tackle. The offensive line as a whole disappointed in 2025, especially in the run game, but when Ty Simpson was firing on all cylinders, it was because he had time to throw.
The loss of Formby all but ensures that Alabama will have a new tackle duo when 2026 comes around. Barring a surprise return from Kadyn Proctor, he will head for the NFL Draft, and Formby seems to be on his way out. For more on where Alabama goes from here, A to Z Sports Alabama contributor Josh Taylor added some insight.
“Seeing Formby hit the portal is very notable, considering he played 364 snaps at RG and 446 at RT. This tells me Michael Carroll will be the starting RT next season, as he should be. This is still a big loss for the Crimson Tide, though. Alabama will need to attack the portal for depth and a starting RG next season, with Formby and Alinen leaving, and Jaeden Roberts out of eligibility.”
“The offensive line was a weak link way too often this past season, and it’s a unit that DeBoer needs to figure out heading into the spring so they aren’t shuffling around players again next season. The offensive line will look completely different next season, and the most intriguing group for fans to keep an eye on. Alabama needs to open the checkbook and invest as much NIL in some experienced players in the portal.” – Taylor
