Alabama’s latest transfer portal loss proves that the Crimson Tide has something big cooking at the wide receiver position
Crimson Tide’s latest loss at the wide receiver position proves Alabama is up to something big in the portal.
The hits keep coming for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Not only has the team lost a starting returner and a starting right tackle, but the Crimson Tide’s depth continues to take a hit on both sides of the ball.
Defensively, that could ensure the Crimson Tide returns a breakout defender from 2025. However, following the latest wide receiver departure, Alabama now has just five players in their WR room, and it could soon be four, depending on Isaiah Horton. That can only mean one thing for the Crimson Tide in the portal.
Alabama loses Rico Scott to transfer portal
The loss of the redshirt freshman is a blow for the Crimson Tide, but one that you could see coming. After bursting onto the scene early in the year, his usage rate diminished down the stretch, as players like Lotzeir Brooks began making plays for the Crimson Tide.
With so few players left in that WR room, it tells me that Alabama will be adding some key additions via the portal. A to Z Sports has spoken with sources about potential targets for Alabama, and we know that arguably the best player in the portal, Cam Coleman, will be visiting Tuscaloosa this week. For more on the move, here is analysis from A to Z Sports contributor Josh Taylor:
“The writing was on the wall that Scott would be transferring with his snap counts drastically dropping. He played on almost 200 snaps in the first eight games of the season, and only saw the field on 59 snaps in the last seven games. Still, it’s a notable loss with Alabama’s wide receiver room thinning out to only five players on the roster, and this tells me Isaiah Horton should be returning for one more year.
“The transfer portal is the college free agency, and teams know the direction they want to go, and they already have a plan in place, and targets on their board. Cam Coleman is the obvious big domino to fall and Plan A, but there will be others for them to target that we haven’t heard about yet.”

Alabama loses Keon Keeley to transfer portal
Keeley was quiet for much of the season, but he came on strong when the team needed him following the loss of LT Overton (who declared for the NFL Draft on Sunday). It was Yhonzae Pierre or bust for much of the season, and losing a player with the potential and flashes that Keeley showed for the Tide could ensure that yet again.
“This decision is surprising to me, considering that we saw an increase in his snap counts over the last three games of the season,” Taylor said. “He played 35 snaps against Oklahoma in the CFB Playoff and followed it up with 25, which is the highest he’s had in two single games this season. Keeley finished with a sack in both games and looked like he was finding his groove.
“Alabama has already been linked to transfer portal prospects like Devan Thompkins, who is visiting Alabama on Monday, and this also points towards Pierre coming back for one more season. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see them linked to more top transfer portal targets over the next few days.”
