Indiana HC Curt Cignetti changes his tune a bit when talking about Kalen DeBoer and his matchup with the Alabama Crimson Tide
The normally brash head coach of the Hoosiers was a little more complimentary when it came to Alabama.
Curt Cignetti might be the hottest name in college football when it comes to coaches right now. Known for his brash confidence, bravado, and quirky one-liners, it’s one thing to talk a big game; it’s another to back it up.
After taking a program that many forgot about and building it into a Big Ten champion and No. 1 overall seed in the College Football Playoff in less than two years, it’s safe to say that Cignetti can back up his words. However, at his former place of employment, he wasn’t nearly as controversial as he has been in the past.
Curt Cignetti compliments Alabama, Kalen DeBoer
“That was a tremendous comeback on the road in a hostile environment, to come back from 17 points down and come out with a win,” Cignetti said during his pre-Rose Bowl press conference via YouTube. “I think it tells you a lot about the character of their football team. They got a lot of great players are extremely well coached, and so you know, they’re [a] really good team [will] be a tremendous challenge.”
Kalen DeBoer and Cignetti have a lot in common. Not only have both coached at Alabama, but they also had similar starts in coaching, beginning at a very low level before working their way up to the Power-5 level.
“I’ve got a lot of respect for Alabama and coach DeBoer,” added Cignetti. “I’ve been following his career for a long time. He kind of started out at a lower level, like I did, and ever since he went to Washington, I’ve really kind of studied his offense. I think he’s a great coach.”
Indiana will be the more rested team, but Alabama will have the momentum ahead of the Rose Bowl. A come-from-behind victory in Norman will have the Tide rolling into New Year’s Day, especially with Alabama returning to health. The same can be said for Indiana, however, as they have been studying the Tide for some time.
“Well, you know, I actually did get to watch some of them early in the year, because we had a couple bye weeks, and I’m a film junkie,” Cignetti said. “I’ve always enjoyed studying coach DeBoer’s offenses from the time he was at Washington. So, you know, I got to watch their first Georgia game and some of their other things, they do a lot of really great stuff.”
We’ll see what Alabama has in store for the Hoosiers on the big day.
