Every week during the college football season, SEC coaches hop on a call on Wednesdays to address the media ahead of their games, or even while on a bye. Typically, these are short sessions for the coaches.
Unlike your traditional press conferences, very few media members sit in on the call, with about 5-10 questions being asked over the course of the interview.
Well, today, when Alabama Crimson Tide HC Kalen DeBoer picked up the phone, he received a question he definitely did not see coming.
Eli Drinkwitz asks Kalen DeBoer if he will wear the infamous black hoodie on Saturday
“Are you going to wear the black hoodie of death on the sideline this game with us wearing black jerseys?” Drinkwitz asked DeBoer with a serious tone.
“I’ve got to fit in somehow,” DeBoer said as he tried to keep himself from bursting into laughter. “More than likely. We’ll see what the forecast is. I kind of know, but I’m expecting that. It’s kind of got a life of its own right now. We’re rolling with it.”
Now it might be a little early to compare Kalen DeBoer’s black hoodie to Nick Saban’s Little Debbie’s, but the superstition is starting to pick up steam in Tuscaloosa. Alabama is 12-2 all-time when DeBoer throws on the “black hoodie of death,” as Drinkwitz coined the garment.
Done in a joking manner, it was a refreshing change of pace to the meeting, as Drinkwitz even asked beforehand if that was something he was allowed to do. The two of them don’t have a detailed past, but DeBoer is a fan of Coach Drinkwitz.
“From afar and throughout my time at different parts of the country, there’s been times where you take notice of what he’s done at different places, not just as a head coach, but even as an assistant,” DeBoer said of Drinkwitz.
“His success, it happened over and over at different places, and just what he’s done now here building Missouri and the program there to be so consistent with the number of wins you see each year, their style of play and a place that certainly the fan base has a lot of pride in.”
So it is clear that there is a mutual level of respect between the two sides. Missouri, which has yet to play the caliber of Alabama, is looking to show it is a serious college football playoff contender.
It’s up to Coach DeBoer and the Tide to prove otherwise.
