Germie Bernard puts a target on Alabama’s back after giving the Tennessee Volunteers’ defense bulletin board material
Bernard might be right, but now he will have to face the music.
One of the best rivalries in college football renews this weekend as the Alabama Crimson Tide hosts the Tennessee Volunteers. Within that rivalry comes everything you would expect from two SEC powerhouses who can’t afford a loss.
Alabama has what might be the hottest passing attack in the nation right now, led by Heisman hopeful Ty Simpson. Well, if Alabama is to keep things rolling on Saturday night, it may have to do it without RB Jam Miller and a banged-up Ryan Williams.
That would put an onus on Alabama’s leading WR, Germie Bernard, to make some big plays. If you ask him, that’s exactly what he’s expecting to do.
Germie Bernard challenges Vols’ secondary
“They like to play man-to-man, and they want to bring the house,” said Bernard via The Next Round. “It’s a great opportunity for our offense. They give up a lot of yards, but that’s because they trust and believe in their guys to get the job done. And you know, for us to have the opportunity to go against man-to-man is a field of dreams. That’s what receivers want — those one-on-one matchups, so it’s just gonna be up to us to go out there and make the plays.”
Bernard has flourished in year two of Kalen DeBoer’s offense. A personal favorite of Ty Simpson, Bernard has 28 catches, for 412 yards and five touchdowns, all of which lead a dominant trio of Crimson Tide WRs.
He’s a bit of a do-it-all playmaker with the ball in his hands. He doesn’t have the vertical element that Ryan Williams does, nor can he play above the rim like Isaiah Horton, but he’s as reliable and safe a chain mover as you will find. He is what a lot of NFL scouts call “a bucket getter.” Meaning when you’re down and you just need someone to hit a layup, or to catch a pass to move the sticks, you turn to them.
That is Bernard to a tee.
So he certainly has the reputation to back up his words and perform with his actions, but you better believe that the Vols will be using those words against him.
