The Alabama Crimson Tide is looking to reload in the transfer portal and return to National Championship contention next year.

We’ve already seen Alabama lose a lot of notable names in the portal since its season came to an ugly end, but they will be aggressive in making sure they get talent back as well. The offense will look very different next year, and that’s before we know what happens with Ty Simpson.

Alabama needs to fix the run game this offseason, and they just got a major boost by landing a top RB in the transfer portal with a commitment from Hollwood Smothers.

No. 3 RB Hollywood Smothers commits to Alabama

The running back room was a carousel all season long for the Crimson Tide. With the inconsistencies and injuries they have suffered, they need a big-play threat that has been missing in the backfield. AK Dear had the longest carry of the season at just 56 yards, and he only had 19 carries on the season. Smothers is a big-play threat that Alabama fans will be excited about.

“Alabama lands its first big addition from the portal after incurring a ton of losses, and it comes at a perfect time. Smothers will elevate this offense beyond what the running game was in 2025. His dual-threat ability as both a pass catcher and runner will raise the floor of Alabama’s offense, as he’s the kind of player who you just give the ball to and watch him go to work.

Now, the question for Alabama is: can they better the unit up front? With as many as four starters likely to be gone from the offensive line in 2026, how well that unit protects will be critical for the Crimson Tide’s offense. Smothers doesn’t need a ton of room to operate, but the guys in front of him have to perform better than they did in 2025.” Rob Gregson, A to Z Sports Alabama

What Alabama’s running back room can look like in 2026

Alabama could have a dynamic duo of Smothers and true freshman Ezavier Crowell in the backfield, and the sky is the limit. Crowell has a ton of hype coming to Alabama, and the film backs it up as the No. 2 RB in the 2026 recruiting class on Rivals’ rankings.

Richard Young has already hit the transfer portal, and we are waiting to see who else decides to join him or stay, and the Smothers commitment will definitely factor in with that.
