SEC Rival poaches highly regarded transfer from Alabama despite his commitment to the Crimson Tide just days ago
Alabama has lost two of its most wanted portal players to Texas.
While the Alabama Crimson Tide are firmly entrenched in rebuilding its trenches, one of the main goals of this transfer portal was to add better weaponry on offense. Primarily, another serious threat at the WR position, and a running back that could bring some explosion out of the backfield.
Well, Alabama thought it solved the latter of that duo when Hollywood Smothers committed to the Crimson Tide earlier this week. The onus then turned to the WR position when Isaiah Horton decided to transfer. Now, just days later, Alabama has lost its top option at the WR position, and Smothers isn’t coming to Alabama after all.
Hollywood Smothers flips transfer portal commitment to Texas
Smothers rubbed a lot of Alabama fans the wrong way when it became clear this weekend that he lied about being fully committed to the Crimson Tide, as it was later proven that he took a visit to Texas before ultimately committing to the Longhorns on Sunday afternoon. For more on the portal flip, here is a A to Z Sports Alabama contributor, Josh Taylor:
“The loss of Smothers shows you the state of college football right now. Nothing is a done deal until the ink is dry. Despite being committed to Alabama, making it his profile picture on social media, Texas came in with an offer you couldn’t refuse. The transfer portal is just like recruiting now and the free agency period in the NFL.”
“Players will go wherever they are paid more, and a commitment means nothing anymore. Smothers had the potential to be a top contributor on offense, and Alabama has to pivot. Alabama’s rushing offense struggled too much this year to not swing big on a true RB1 in the portal. Justice Haynes is trending towards Georgia Tech, but Alabama has to attempt to steal him away and play hardball as Texas did.”
Cam Coleman commits to Texas
While sources expressed optimism to A to Z Sports about Coleman’s visit to Tuscaloosa, they made it clear that a Texas-based school was always going to be the top option for Coleman, and so he went with the Longhorns instead of the Crimson Tide. For more on that move, here is analysis from Taylor.
“Coleman seemed like a possibility for Alabama, but a stretch with Texas in play. Similar to the RB room, Alabama needs more experience and a veteran of the group like it did this season with Horton and Bernard.
“Alabama has recently been linked to Noah Rogers, who played at NC State over the last two season, and would be a great addition at 6-2, 205 pounds, with 28 games under his belt. Also, don’t sleep on Tony Diaz, who was only a freshman at UT Rio Grande Valley. He is one of those diamonds in the rough, and a big time playmaker who deserves to play D1.” – Taylor
The winter window will close this Friday, Jan.16, giving Alabama a little over five business days to finish strong in the portal.
