Joel Klatt fuels Alabama QB Ty Simpson’s Heisman campaign while simultaneously throwing shade at Arch Manning

Joel Klatt is ready to go all in on Ty Simpson.

After the Alabama Crimson Tide lost to Florida State in Week 1, many felt that the sky was falling. Forget the anger with Kalen DeBoer, it was Ty Simpson’s decision-making and presence that left a lot to be desired.

But it’s probably not a coincidence that Simpson has been a tear ever since that loss, and Alabama has followed in his footsteps. He’s now accounted for 15 total touchdowns and only one interception while throwing for nearly 1,500 yards on a 70 percent completion rate. In other words, he’s dealing.

So much so, that Joel Klatt says that if Simpson had a different last name, he would have already locked up the Heisman Trophy.

Joel Klatt says Ty Simpson would have Heisman wrapped up if his last name were Manning

“If Ty Simpson’s name was Ty Manning, we would cancel the end of the season Heisman Trophy ceremony and just do it now,” Klatt said via The Next Round. Thats the best pure passing game in college football [and] Simpson has been the best quarterback in college football from a pure passing perspective.”

“There were like five time when I paused the film and was like ‘woah, that’s a bug league, top three draft pick type of throw,” added Klatt on Simpson vs. Wisconsin.

Now part of that quote is shade at Arch Manning as Klatt is insinuating that he carried all the hype but hasn’t performed, but that is neither here nor there. The truth is, Klatt is right. The last month of the season, Simpson looks like a totally reconstructed passer compared to Week 1.

The poise within the pocket mirrors his comfort level out of structure. He’s been equally impressive throwing over the middle with anticipation, as he has been when targeting the perimeter of the offense deep downfield.

He took a few bad sacks against Vanderbilt, and he tends to hold on to the ball too long at times, but he has the abilty to flush bad plays and move on to the next. But that’s all my perspective. I reached out to Adam Holt, who covers colllege football and the NFL Draft at A to Z Sports to see if he was seeing what I am.

“Ty Simpson has been really, really impressive ever since the Tide’s season opener loss. When you’re a quarterback with limited experience, it can be tough to bounce back from a deflating loss, but you’d never guess that with the Alabama QB. Simpson has been decisive and aggressive down the field, totaling at least 225 passing yards in every game this season and only throwing one interception.”

“The Tide’s starter sits in third in Heisman Trophy odds (via DraftKings Sportsbook), only behind Oregon QB Dante Moore and Miami QB Carson Beck. I would imagine that Simpson stays in that conversation as well. He’s proven he can play up to his competition, and there will be plenty of that ahead during the team’s SEC schedule. While that does make life more difficult, it also bolsters his resumé to take home an award this season.”

“While plenty of storylines have swirled around Texas and Arch Manning, Simpson has quietly helped the Crimson Tide quickly turn around their season and look lethal in the passing game on a weekly basis.” -Holt

I think it’s safe to say that should Simpson keep playing at this level, he will be in New York with a good shot at hoisting hardware by the end of the season.
