The Alabama Crimson Tide looked like a dead team walking after a quarter and a half in Norman, Oklahoma on Friday night. For the last five weeks, the Tide simply didn’t look like the same team that dominated the middle portion of the season. Between the SEC Championship and the start of the OU game, it looked like the Kalen DeBoer era might have ended before it even began.

But then came 27 unanswered points, and a team that fought all the way back in the second half despite a strong push from the Oklahoma Sooners, punching its ticket to the Rose Bowl and proving that AD Greg Byrne made the right choice.

Kalen DeBoer proves he can win big at Alabama with comeback against Oklahoma

It’s one thing to win your first College Football Playoff game as head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, and to make history as the first coach to win a road game in the expanded field. It’s another, however, to do that after being down 17 in one of the sport’s most hostile environments, with constant rumors about your future swirling, and the team on the breaking point after the last five weeks.

This wasn’t just a playoff win. This was a win with everything stacked against him. With questions lingering about whether coach DeBoer could win a big game at Alabama. It’s safe to say he did just that.

“Last night we talked about it being a team that’s going to have to come out here and play together, and that’s exactly what I saw tonight. And so I couldn’t be more proud of these guys,” said Kalen DeBoer after the game via Alabama’s YouTube channel.

A to Z Sports Alabama contributor Josh Taylor added some insight on the big win from DeBoer and Alabama.

“A massive comeback win on the road in the College Football Playoff was exactly what Kalen DeBoer needed to silence the outside noise. From down 17-0 to winning 34-24 showed that he can coach in the biggest games in the biggest moments. There was a lot of noise about how this team couldn’t live up to the Alabama standard after a poor showing in the SEC Championship game. People were ready for Alabama to lose this game and stir up the rumors for DeBoer to go to Michigan, but all the speculation took a massive hit after this win.”

“DeBoer showed that this team won’t go down without a fight, and maybe that he won’t be leaving anytime soon. This was a culture reset type of win to remind people why Alabama made the College Football Playoff, with so many distractions going on. Alabama moves on to the Rose Bowl to face Indiana, where DeBoer can continue to leave Michigan in the shadows and prove everyone wrong.”
