There were times last year and (even after Week 1 this year) where people questioned the leadership of Alabama Crimson Tide HC Kalen DeBoer. They questioned how much discipline and tough love he was giving his players.

I’d say that given the lack of mental errors and drive-killing penalties over the course of the last month, those questions can subside. But what really proved that? Well after the dominant win that Alabama had over the Tennessee Volunteers, things got a little heated on the field.

Kalen DeBoer swooped in fast, however, making sure a small problem didn’t become a much bigger one.

Kalen DeBoer breaks up a postgame skirmish between Alabama and Tennessee

One of the best rivalries in the sport, the third Saturday in October elicits a lot of emotions on all sides. You could see the intensity in Kalen DeBoer as he left the tunnel, during timeouts when he would walk onto the field, and within his player interactions on the sideline. DeBoer, like everyone else, knew what a win on Saturday would mean.

Forget the revenge factor from last year, how about the fact that Alabama now has four wins in a row against ranked opponents and they did so with a statement win over the No. 11 team in the country to close the month. So yea, they were amped up and it may have spilled into the postgame.

“Yeah, our guys were fired up,” said DeBoer in his postgame presser via Alabama’s YouTube channel. “So I was excited to see them go out there and do their thing. I think we understand, the week of preparation gets you mentally in the right space to where you’re confident going out on the football field. When you’re confident, you got a little more energy.”

“And that’s, that’s really what I see with our guys. And so, you know, that fires me up. We channeled the energy into the right things, being disciplined and all of that. I know there’s penalties at the end the last couple drives, but rather make them have to earn it if we get beat, or something like that. Rather make them have to earn it, then just give up some free yards. And so just really pleased with the discipline and how we’re channeling that energy into the right areas.”

And DeBoer’s team showed that discipline, the same way he showed his leadership after the game. The question is, can the Tide sustain said energy, edge, and discipline? Because if they can, then look out college football.
