If there was one thing separated Nick Saban from every other college coach during his tenure with the Alabama Crimson Tide, it was his quest for more. An insatiable appetite for success, Ole Miss Rebels HC Lane Kiffin tells stories of coach Saban calling for 7:30 am meetings the morning after winning a national championship.

Obviously, Kalen DeBoer’s Crimson Tide has a long way to go to capture even 1/6th of the success that Coach Saban did at Alabama. But right now, they find themselves lauded as one of the best teams in the nation, with many favoring them to make a deep run in the College Football Playoff.

Well, in order to guard against the noise otherwise known as “rat poison” by Nick Saban, Kalen DeBoer has developed a new mantra for his team.

Kalen DeBoer reveals “Shut up and work” Mantra

“We refer to it as ‘Shut up, show up and do the work,’” DeBoer told the media during his weekly presser on YouTube. “I mean, that’s just really what we’ve gotta hone in on. And in everything we do, we just have an urgency level. And I’m really proud of the guys for not falling off that standard that we had, because that’s what human nature is. You get comfortable.”

“We’ve had five wins in a row now, and our conference and the schedule keeps you from that. That’s one thing that keeps you from falling off the standard, because every week, if you don’t, you know you’re gonna be in trouble. And so, I’m just proud of the way the guys have been resilient in the moments that matter most.”

The enemy of good is great. Right now, Alabama is good; if they are great, they will get the job done against the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday. This game will be unlike any Alabama has played thus far. The last three wins and even the FSU loss featured run-centric teams. Sure, the Georgia Bulldogs will spread the ball around, but Georgia’s bread and butter is rushing.

Joey Aguilar and the Vols will come into Bryant-Denny and throw the ball until the laces fall off. That’s no secret, it’s line one in the scouting report for Alabama’s defense. But how the defense responds remains to be seen, as does Alabama’s ceiling, with DeBoer’s mantra being put to the test down the back half of the season.
