Kalen DeBoer pushes back on the narrative surrounding Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson’s recent performance against South Carolina
Kalen DeBoer went to bat for his starting quarterback, while stating where he needed to improve.
For three quarters last week, the Alabama Crimson Tide, and more specifically, quarterback Ty Simpson looked out of sync. The run game issues continued, the pass protection was suspect, and too many balls were on the ground.
But Ty Simpson wasn’t as sharp as he normally is against South Carolina. There were a few mises that didn’t replicate the playmaker and pinpoint passer that he’s been all season. Ultimately, though, he settled in and rallied in the 4th quarter to give Alabama the win.
Well, there seems to be a national narrative that he played a bad game, and Kalen DeBoer cleared that up on Wednesday.

“I know that you can look at just one thing, I mean completion percentage, he’s an accurate passer, really accurate and his standards are extremely high relative to others,” DeBoer said during Wednesday’s SEC coaches teleconference. “That alone right there is an indication that, for one reason or another, we weren’t hitting as clean and as efficient as we’d like to.”
“Of course, that always falls on the quarterback, you know, it always does. But there’s other ways we could have helped him. We could protect a little bit better. You can run a route a little bit route a little bit better, and you can catch the ball a couple more times on those balls that were catching contact.”
The quiet storyline that would be a lot louder had Alabama lost, would be the drop issues that continue to plague Ryan Williams. He simply hasn’t been as reliable with his hands this year. There is no way around that.
But it wasn’t just him. Kadyn Proctor, who is supposed to a surefire top 10 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, got worked on plenty of times against the South Carolina pass rushers. So it wasn’t a great showing for the stars around Simpson.
“It’s a full unit, and it does fall on Ty,” added DeBoer. “But he again made the plays down the stretch, and he battled. If there was anyone who believed, it was him. That was certainly something our team felt, and that’s why they kept playing until the very end.”
That they did. And while the team is idle this week, it won’t get any easier the next time they lace them up. Suddenly, Alabama has a trap game after the massive change among the LSU Tigers, and it will be on Alabama to keep their foot to the floor.
