One of the biggest storylines in the sport of college football this offseason will be what happens at quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Ahead of spring ball, Kalen DeBoer and Ryan Grubb were careful in their words, making it clear that no one had a leg up, and that they believe they have the best quarterback room in the country.

DeBoer put a timeline on his decision to name his starter, but there is a good chance this battle goes deep into fall camp, much less spring ball. That didn’t stop DeBoer from sharing what he’s seeing early on in Tuscaloosa.

“You can tell that they’ve had a number of reps from last year under their belt, playing with confidence, calling the play in the huddle with confidence,” DeBoer said via the Alabama YouTube channel on Tuesday. “Both of them are lightyears ahead of where they were a year ago, obviously, and they should be.”

“[I] Like what they’ve done through two practices. Created some good explosives on their end, good feel, working the mobility when they have to. That’s part of football, too. It forces scramble drills and things like that. When that does come up, that helps our defense as well. So I think they’re really putting a lot of pressure on our defense. Our defense is doing the same to them.”

How Keelon Russell and Austin Mack separate from one another

There are so many moving parts with Alabama’s offense this season. You have a rebuilt offensive line, a running back room with no clear starter, and a plethora of new weapons and players that have to step up on the perimeter.

So the quarterback who wins the job will be the one Kalen DeBoer has the most confidence in. When things go south in a game because of the lack of chemistry and moving parts, DeBoer is going to want to know his signal caller won’t blink. That his starter will be the rising tide that lifts all boats.

He’s got around six months to figure out who that will be.
