The Alabama Crimson Tide has been in the news a lot over the last eight days, but little has to do with the product on the field. After being the face of controversy following the release of the College Football Playoff, Kalen DeBoer was thrown headfirst back into coaching rumors after the shocking firing of Michigan HC Sherrone Moore.

What has been lost in all the noise is that, as of publish time, Alabama plays its first College Football Playoff Game under DeBoer in just five days. Players like Ryan Williams went to bat for DeBoer this week, but until the words came from DeBoer himself, the rumors would (and potentially still) may linger. Well, DeBoer did just that on Sunday evening.

Kalen DeBoer says he has no desire to leave Alabama for Michigan

“My family and I are very happy in Tuscaloosa and remain extremely grateful for the support of President Mohler, Greg Byrne, the board, and so many others,” said DeBoer in a statement released by the University of Alabama. “We have an incredible opportunity in front of us, so my sole focus is on Alabama football and our preparations to play Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff.

“I have not spoken and have no interest in speaking with anyone else about any other job. I am fully committed to this program and look forward to continuing as the head football coach at the University of Alabama.”

Alabama AD Greg Byrne added the following after DeBoer’s statement was released: “We are proud to have Coach DeBoer leading our football program at The University of Alabama. He is an incredible coach and does an excellent job with the development of our student-athletes, both on and off the field. Just as he is committed to this team, we are committed to him, and we look forward to taking the field on Friday in the first round of the College Football Playoff.”

Now, even if DeBoer were to leave and take the head job at Michigan, this statement has to be released. He has been a popular name in plenty of rumors this offseason, but he has denied them at every turn. For more insight on DeBoer’s statement, here’s a note from my partner at A to Z Sports Alabama, Josh Taylor:

“Kalen DeBoer didn’t HAVE to say something about the rumors about the Michigan job, but his coming out and saying that helps a lot. Of course, it’s a clear distraction that the team sees, as Ryan Williams mentioned, but DeBoer has a playoff game to worry about. Saying something will at least get the media off his back and assure the locker room that he’s locked in right now. This doesn’t seem like a statement that applies only to now, but to the long haul as well.

“Alabama does play the first playoff game, though, so a quick exit will make people ask DeBoer if he’s 100% sure if the noise gets loud. But the best way to avoid that is to win and make a statement against Oklahoma. Regardless of the outcome, I don’t see DeBoer leaving Alabama anytime soon, and this statement was pretty reassuring of that. Greg Byrne coming out as well showed that they wouldn’t let DeBoer leave without a fight, either.” – Taylor
