A key member of Kalen DeBoer’s Alabama Crimson Tide coaching staff could be a candidate for a recently opened head coaching job.

On Sunday, California fired head coach Justin Wilcox. The move came after California’s 31-10 loss to Stanford.

Wilcox, who has previously served as the defensive coordinator at Boise State, Tennessee, Washington, USC, and Wisconsin, had been the head coach at Cal since 2017. He went 48-55 during his nine seasons leading the program.

Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb named as a candidate to replace Justin Wilcox at California

Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was one of several names mentioned by On3 this week as an option to replace Wilcox at Cal.

“The former Washington and Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator is in his first season with Kalen DeBoer at Alabama,” wrote On3’s Pete Nakos. “A former Fresno State assistant, too, Grubb has clear West Coast ties. He’s developed quarterback Ty Simpson into a Heisman Trophy candidate.”

As Nakos pointed out, Grubb has plenty of west coast connections, so he could make sense at California.

On the other hand, Grubb has one of the top assistant coach jobs in college football right now, so he can be picky with his next move. He may choose to wait on a better opportunity.

We’ll see what happens over the next couple of weeks. There are still a lot of dominoes left to fall that could heavily influence how this coaching carousel plays out.
