Lane Kiffin might be helping Alabama win another championship with expected move that could flip the CFP bracket upside down
Lane Kiffin could be making the lives of the Alabama Crimson Tide much easier.
Sure, things may have not ended on the best of terms, but as time has passed, the relationship between Lane Kiffin and Nick Saban has steadily improved. Kiffin has been vocal about what Saban did for his coaching career while he coordinated for the Alabama Crimson Tide. And Nick Saban has been open about Lane Kiffin’s offensive philosophy, which changed the way that the Crimson Tide went about scheme on that side of the ball.
After all, Kiffin was the OC when Alabama won the national championship during the 2015-2016 season. And with expectations that Kiffin takes over as HC of the LSU Tigers, he could be helping Alabama’s chances of winning another in 2025-2026.
Lane Kiffin’s departure for LSU could leave Ole Miss out of the CFP
If all the reports are true and Kiffin departs for Baton Rouge with a coaching staff comprised of current Ole Miss Rebels staffers and players, now the committee has a decision to make. It would be very likely that some of the best players on Ole Miss’ roster enter the transfer portal. Suddenly, a 7th-ranked Ole Miss team would be a skeleton of itself.
That would force the committee to decide whether or not the Rebels are still deserving of a spot in the CFP. And while it was different, given that the expanded field hadn’t started yet, we have precedent for this exact situation.
The Florida State Seminoles were left out of the playoff in 2023 when starting QB Jordan Travis was ruled out for the season. The committee thought Alabama would be better to represent the field of four, and they inserted the Crimson Tide.
At the very least, even if Ole Miss was left in the field, it’s hard to envision a world where major pieces like coaches and players leave, and they still are ahead of teams like Alabama. So whether Ole Miss drops in the rankings or if they are out entirely, Alabama will likely be thanking Lane Kiffin for his expected move to LSU, given what should be a better ranking for the Crimson Tide.
Because as Kalen DeBoer said after the Iron Bowl, Alabama’s resume is as good as anyone in the country. Win or lose in the SEC championship, Alabama should be a lock for the CFP.
“Yeah, I mean, we’re 7-1 in the SEC. I mean, that would blow my mind, but I know what you’re getting at, that’s crazy. And I don’t mean to saying your question is crazy, but just that would be unreal,” said Kalen DeBoer via the Alabama Crimson Tide YouTube channel when asked about missing the CFP. “You know, I mean we’re 10-2 and 7-1 in the SEC with all these ranked wins, and we got some [good] wins on the road. We got more than a playoff-caliber football team. There’s not a question in my mind.”
