The Alabama spring game may have only been part of the puzzle of the team's 2025 quarterback competition, but that doesn't mean there's not a favorite already.

New Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb had no qualms about naming one of his three options as the early leader in the clubhouse. While there's plenty of time for ground to be made up, Grubb said Ty Simpson would be on the field tomorrow if a game was on the schedule.

“If we’re playing a football game tomorrow, Ty Simpson would start,” Grubb said

Simpson has always been the odds-on favorite to start the 2025 season for the Tide. He previously said he's ready to start, and there was some surprise when he opted against transferring out before this past year. Simpson will be a fourth-year junior in 2025.

This season, he participated in six games, passing for 167 yards with a 14-of-25 completion rate. Additionally, he rushed for 44 yards and scored one touchdown on eight carries in his third year with the Alabama football team.

The former 5-star quarterback has yet to start, though, and his small sample size has been nothing special. He has some running ability as well, though obviously, it is not comparable to Milroe.

SEC expert Paul Finebaum added his thoughts on the Alabama quarterback race when he joined SportsCenter.

“Ty Simpson has been around a couple of years. Austin Mack came over from Washington with the head coach Kalen DeBoer. The one everybody is excited about is Keelon Russell. He’s a brand new freshman. He’s a five-star. But the problem is we don’t know, and that’s not a good sign for Alabama."

The Tide opted against chasing Nico Iamaleava in the transfer portal to this point, but it might be a worthwhile call if they can match his massive price tag. Otherwise, DeBoer and Grubb might be putting their jobs on the line with Simpson.
