Nick Saban jokes about the one reason he's considering returning to coach football, and Miss Terry might not like it
Nick Saban’s potential return to coaching has been a hot topic of conversation lately, and the former Alabama head coach was finally asked about the possibility.
Nick Saban has been a hot topic of conversation in recent days. Last week at SEC Media Days, Greg McElroy brought up the possibility of the former Alabama head coach returning to field, and the story blew up. It even reached a point where Saban's daughter, Kristen, had to come out and say that "he's not coming back."
That should've put the rumors to bed, but that hasn't stopped people from speculating about the possibility. On Friday morning, Saban joined FOX News Channel’s FOX & Friends where he was asked if he was considering a return to coaching. His response was typical Saban that included wit and humor.
"It's amazing to me that came up in the media and the media speaks for you, and thinks for you," Saban said. "I never really had a thought about getting back into coaching until two days ago. Miss Terry said I had to run the sweeper in the entire downstairs. While I was running the sweeper, the thought occurred to me, when you were a coach, you had a heck of a lot better job than this. So, that's the only time I considered it."
I think we've all been there while having to suffer through housework, right fellas? But a happy wife is a happy life. Apparently, Saban's answer wasn't sufficient enough for Brian Kilmeade with Fox News, as he pressed the seven-time national championship-winning head coach to give a more concrete reply.
"No, I'm really happy with what I'm doing right now," he said. "It's exciting to still be involved in the game. It's exciting for me to work with athletic directors, conference commissioners, people in Congress to preserve the integrity of our game and continue to be able to create opportunities to help young people create value for their future that will help them be successful in their life, which is what we always try to do as a coach."
Was that good enough for Kilmeade? Of course not, as he decided to ask Saban a third time. This time, it included if President Donald Trump's recent executive order on NIL payments to college athletes would prompt a return to coaching.
"There is no opportunity that I know of right now that would enhance me to go back to coaching," Saban said. "I enjoy what I'm doing. I did it for 50 years, I loved it. I loved the relationships with the players. I loved the competition. But it's another station of life now. I enjoy what I'm doing right now and want to continue to do it — spend more time with my family, my grandchildren, my children. It's been really, really good."
Some will read into, "There is no opportunity that I know of right now" to further speculate, but he seems pretty set in his answer. Maybe that changes in the future, but I don't think he's considering a return right now.
