While the popularity of college football continues to climb, many are starting to wonder how long it will be before it all comes crashing down. Not because of the product on the field, but rather what’s going on behind the scenes.

NIL, the transfer portal, tampering, pay for play, and the erosion of the group of five are just a few of the issues that plague one of the most popular sports in the world. So, many have floated the idea of installing a commissioner for the sport. Someone who, similar to what Roger Goodell does in the NFL, can govern and oversee the infrastructure.

Well, in an exercise for A to Z Sports, we had a mock draft for who should be considered, and you can probably guess who was the first pick.

Nick Saban drafted first overall in CFB Commissioner mock draft

If the candidates to be commissioner of college football were NFL Draft prospects, former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban would be a perfect 10 on the grading scale. Should college football ever decide to elect a commissioner, the conversation starts and ends with the former head coach of the Crimson Tide. Forget the fact that he’s won more championships than any other coach or that he’s coached the most first-round NFL Draft picks in the history of the sport.

Coach Saban knows how to read a room. He can motivate a rock to move, and he would govern the sport the way he did his teams: through discipline, integrity, and pride. He knows what’s best for college football because he’s won at every level. There will never be another Coach Saban, and that alone should have him as the top man for the job, the only problem is, he may not want it.

Nick Saban seems happy with his day job

“I’m not really looking for a job, but I do know I’d like to impact college football the best way I can, whether it’s being a spokesperson or anything else,” Nick Saban told ESPN, back in 2024.

It’s hard to beat his current gig as co-host of ESPN’s College GameDay and ambassador to the University of Alabama.

But if things keep teetering in the wrong direction, Saban may have no choice.

“I think we need to have a commissioner who’s kind of over all the conferences, as well as a competition committee who sort of defines the rules of how we’re going to play the game,” Saban said back in December. “Because that’s what we don’t have right now.

“We used to have contracts, for coaches and for players, that define what’s your academic responsibilities, when can you transfer, what’s your obligation to the school. We don’t have that now. And if you really don’t support that, you’re kind of supporting a little bit of anarchy, which is what we have right now, whether it’s coaches or players.”

Someone needs to fix the sport before it gets too far out of hand, and that someone is Nick Saban.
