Alabama Crimson Tide may finally see the return of a key starter when he’s needed most ahead of 2025 Iron Bowl
A major boost could be on the way for Alabama.
Coming into the game against the Oklahoma Sooners, if you told the Alabama Crimson Tide coaches they would outgain the Sooners by almost 200 yards, control the clock, and hold OU’s offense to only 17 points, they would have asked how much the Tide won by.
Instead, it was same of the same old issues with Alabama’s offense, and a trend from Ty Simpson that finally caught up to Alabama. But the defense had a lot to write home about. It was the kind of win that inspires confidence in the unit going forward.
And that conference should be mirrored by the fanbase when you hear how close the team was to having one of the defense’s better players against Oklahoma.
Qua Russaw nearing return for Alabama
“I think that we’re in position for him to play very soon,” Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said via the Crimson Tide YouTube channel. “Obviously, he needs to have a good week of preparation and feel good. He pushed last week, we pushed last week and so we’ll see kind of how he has handled that. I haven’t seen him since from on the field perspective because we didn’t run full speed or anything on Sunday. So, we’ll get a chance to see what he looks like on Tuesday and then kind of go from there.”
Hearing that Russaw was that close to playing against Oklahoma makes you wonder if he will play as early as this week against Eastern Illinois. There are certainly arguments for both sides. Russaw could see this game as a ramp-up for the Iron Bowl and eventual postseason.
Or, you let him get one more week of rest and make sure he is 100% healthy come the Iron Bowl. A game that is a must-win if Alabama wants to punch its ticket to Atlanta for the SEC championship, and get back on the right side of the CFP bracket.
“Qua’s a very good football player,” Wommack added. “When he went out, and he practiced all last week, I was really impressed with how consistent he was and doing his job, his responsibility. I mean, there’s a bit of a learning curve or knocking the rust off a little bit. He did a really nice job last week. So excited to feel like [that] when he does get back on the field, we’re going to be able to get him out there and get him rolling.”
