South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer did Alabama a massive disservice after revealing how the Gamecocks slowed down Ty Simpson
The blueprint is out, and now it’s on Alabama and Ty Simpson to elevate.
Until the fourth quarter on Saturday, the Alabama Crimson Tide offense and quarterback Ty Simpson looked out of sync. A lack of run game, far too many drops, and the occasional uncharacteristic miss from Simpson marred what was far too close a game for three quarters.
Ultimately, Alabama escaped with the win and heads into the bye week in a great spot, with a new look LSU Tigers coming to T-town.
But it’s not all BBQ and banana pudding in Tuscaloosa, or at least it shouldn’t be. Not only did South Carolina’s defense show how they can slow down Simpson on tape, but head coach Shane Beamer let the world know.
Shane Beamer lays out blueprint for slowing down Ty Simpson
“We were confident coming into the game, no disrespect to any team that they had played, but we really felt like we would present them some problems,” said Beamer via Bama Central after the game. “And that if you looked just statistically in the SEC at pass defense, we statistically, I think, were better in pass defense than anybody they had played.”
“So we liked our matchup out there. I mean, we didn’t do anything different defensively. We wanted to heat him up a lot and put pressure on him and stop the run, and we did that. They had two yards rushing at halftime. We did a nice job stopping the run and keeping him in the pocket and missed a couple sacks that turned into big plays, but proud of the way those guys played up front.”
The truth is, Simpson has been inconsistent against pressure. The recipe for success against most young quarterbacks is to heat them up, speed up their processing, and rush them into mistakes. Simpson has a built-in counter with his legs and sturdy mechanics, but he does his best work when he’s dealing from the middle of the pocket. Throwing in rhythm, with touch, timing, and anticipation.
But at times, holding on to the ball and taking bad sacks have plagued Simpson. It happened in Week 1 and he was clearly uncomfortable against South Carolina for most of the game. Luckily for Simpson and Alabama, they have one of the best offensive line’s in college football.
But if coordinators find a way to get home with pressure, Simpson, Ryan Grubb and Kalen DeBoer will need to continue to find ways to elevate the offense.
