The Alabama Crimson Tide were off to a slow start this offseason, but things have heated up, and notable additions have been made on both sides of the ball.

The trenches will look completely different in Tuscaloosa next season, especially on defense, after struggles late in the season to get pressure and stop the run. Alabama lost some key players up front that it may not have expected, such as Keon Keeley and Qua Russaw, but it just landed a massive replacement up front in Desmond Umeozulu from the transfer portal.

Desmond Umeozulu commits to Alabama

Umeozulu is a 6-6, 255-pound freak on the defensive line, and a huge addition for the Crimson Tide, who still needed to add some real weapons up front after key departures to the NFL and the transfer portal. I asked A to Z Sports Alabama writer Rob Gregson why this is such a win for Alabama, and what to expect from Umeozulu.

“The last couple of weeks have seen the Crimson Tide bolster the interior of its defensive line. The question that remained, however, was what happens to the EDGE group. With LT Overton headed to the NFL and the surprise departure of Qua Russaw, among others, the only household name returning is Yhonzae Pierre. We saw how having just one notable pass rusher played out for Alabama down the stretch in 2025. Adding an experienced player like Umeozulu gives the tide a 1-2 punch on the perimeter of the pass rush grouping. A major move for the Tide.”

What role will Desmond Umeozulu have for Alabama?

Umeozulu looks more like an EDGE or Bandit to fill in for Russaw, given his size. He lined up wide on 204 of his 327 snaps on defense, and that’s where he should be. Let him pin his ears back and get after the quarterback. Umeozulu totaled 15 pressures on 161 pass-rushing snaps. His potential is through the roof, and he could be a real producer even if it’s just on rotational passing situations to get pressure, which was missing last year behind Pierre.

Even with his size, Umeozulu has the length to get off blocks in the run game and only missed two tackles all season, so I wouldn’t count him out of the run game either. Alabama needed to add size in the transfer portal, and that’s what they did with Devan Thompkins, Caleb Smith, Kedrick Bingley-Jones, and Terrance Green. Now we wait to see where everyone plays next season, with many options up front, and new versatile pieces for Kane Wommack to use.
