The top quarterback recruit in the state of Texas has been a hard commit to SMU since last September, but as summer visits are heating up it looks like he may end up flipping to go elsewhere. Keelon Russell, top tier four star quarterback from Duncanville, Texas has been rising up recruiting boards since early last fall and he's now a consensus Top 50 overall player in the entire 2025 recruiting class.
As he's risen up recruiting boards Russell's potential flip to a more elite college football program has looked more and more likely, but will he actually flip? And if so, where to? And what makes him so special anyway? Let's dive in.
Keelon Russell's Elite Talents
Keelon Russell has won back to back Texas 6A state championships with Duncanville High School over the last two seasons. He wasn't supposed to be "the guy" back in 2022, but once he took over as the starting quarterback he never looked back. Duncanville went undefeated, and Russell's legend began to grow. From that point he went from completely unrated by many of the major recruiting services to a consensus Top 300 player. But could he do it again?
The answer was a resounding "yes". Russell (and his five star wide receiver Dakorien Moore) led Duncanville back to another state championship. And this time he did it as a much improved more accurate passer who completed over 70% of his throws, tossing nearly 40 touchdowns in 15 games. He added more value as a rusher last fall too. If he continues to improve this fall there's a real change Russell ends up being a five star recruit in the 2025 class.
Where will Keelon Russell end up signing?
This spring Russell got his official visits schedule settled down to Ole Miss, SMU, Alabama, Florida, and Oregon. He also saw Texas the weekend of their spring game, which led some to believe they might be his eventual flip. However, after his visit to Alabama this weekend with Kalen DeBoer, the Crimson Tide, and some of their young star players, many experts believe that's where he'll be headed when it's all said and done.
Russell apparently spent significant time with incoming Alabama five star wide receiver, Ryan Williams this weekend. Russell shared video of the two bowling together on his official visit this weekend.
If there's going to be any young star to convince a quarterback to come play for Alabama it would be Williams. The five star wide receiver reclassified from 2026 to 2025 so he could get to Tuscaloosa a year ahead of schedule and still maintained his five star status, ranked firmly inside the top ten players in the entire country for 2024.
But it's not just Russell's time with Williams that should have us believe he's going to flip from SMU. Tom Loy and multiple 247Sports staffers have gone ahead and put their "crystal ball" predictions in for Alabama to be the ultimate landing spot for Russell too.
It seems that the combination of Kalen DeBoer's development of Michael Penix Jr., Russell's relationship with new Alabama offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan, and perhaps his constant trajectory upwards as a recruit has him leaning towards seriously looking at joining an elite program like Alabama.
It's been a consistent conversation around the industry ever since Russell dominated this past fall. Could SMU retain (or afford) a talent as special as Russell? That's looking tougher by the day.
It's not a done deal for Alabama just yet. Russell's visit with Ole Miss reportedly went well at the end of April. And he's still set to visit Florida and Oregon on the 7th and 21st of June. The Gators just sent Anthony Richardson to the first round two drafts ago. The Ducks sent Bo Nix just this spring. And Texas, of course, has perhaps two NFL Draft picks on their roster right now. They very well could still be in the mix as well. However, it looks like the new favorite to land Keelon Russell's services (for now) is Alabama.
